First lil foray into animation..... needs some work!

This is my first attempt at animating one of my artworks... so forgive the wibbly quality!

This is the moving version of Wrapper Rapids..
Just had to portray the excitement of these organisms (evolved from discarded bubble gum wrappers) swimming upstream to spawn...
...I think I need a little more practice in this new arena of video editing, but watch this space.... I've got LOADS of exciting plans to come!

My photo summary of The Other Art Fair London, Oct 2017

A huge thank you to the The Other Art Fair and Saatchi Art for a fantastic fair at London's Brick Lane, October 5-8th 2017. This is a special event for artists, you really do feel as if the organsers have our best interests at heart. I was so pleased to be selected and involved!
Four thoroughly enjoyable full days meeting & chatting to fair visitors and other exhibiting artists, discussing all things arty... and beyond. I had friends from different eras of my life stop by, and even meet each other which was fantastic!
...plus of course I'd like to say a special thank you to all the lovely people who bought a piece of my work! Here's my little photo round up:

Framed artworks waiting in their space-age packages.  Surveying my allocated exhibition space
Think I've been given the best space in the building... right next to the action, AKA the bar!
I also have a few pieces around the side here.
Just a millimeter to the left.
And we are ....OPEN!

Time for the private view party
Chatting to lovely visitors from all corners of the globe.

Hmmm... Uhuh, uhuh, quite.

First Bloom of a New Series!

I'm back! Unintentionally, I seem to have just emerged from a 2 month work-hibernation / or 'boot camp' of sorts... not posting anything on social media, just working on a series of brand new artworks, taking the concept within the world of La Shuks art into a slightly different direction.
Thistle & Fructose is the first of these new works to emerge in full bloom!
Kind of completely different to my previous work, yet exactly the same (?!) in that, it features the same future earth, (long after human extinction) where nature itself has evolved from fusions of mutated rubbish/ trash, packaging and other bits of long lost meaning. But instead of landscapes... We're zooming right in to an extreme close up of a patch of foliage and the colourful floral sproutings that have blossomed eventually from the oddments and ephemera.

What is La Shuks?

La Shuks is my art name, (human name Katie Mac). I create limited edition mixed media prints and silkscreens, as well as 3-dimensional pieces and one-of-a-kind originals.

There's a theme running through my work, as it explores an imagined evolution of the earth in the far distant future, once humans no longer exist.
I love the contrast of using landscape photography, strong and grounded in real life, and then warping the scene into a fantasy alternate reality using the relics of long gone human days; logos, symbols, adverts and graffiti... left behind on earth, eventually evolving and gradually fusing and weaving into the natural elements, a kaleidescope of drawn details forming wind currents, rivers, waterfalls and a new evolution of species... it's future nature!
Well, you never know, in a universe of infinite possibilities, maybe this is one of them?!

Another fresh newbie: Shambling Alps

Sometimes it's hard to know when to stop working on an artwork. I could probably keep tweaking this beast for another month or so! But no.....Life dictates that it's finished now.
So here it is; "Shambling Alps" A limited edition mixed media print. 70 x 70 cm

I don't quite remember deciding if it was going to be abstract, or an actual specific thing... But now that it's finished, it's so obviously a mountain dwelling candy-wrappered lava-dragon!

And then THIS happened...

Just when you thought things couldn't get any more bright and colourful in La Shuks land, Tropichrysalis happens!
Incidentally, the first draft of this artwork started twinkling almost two whole years ago, when
I decided I really wanted to create a tropical piece using my many photographs of luscious foliage and caribbean palm trees. But it just kept stalling somewhere in the execution, so
I would put it on hold and move on to other works, completing around 10 artworks during this time. Over the two years since it's first glimmer of life, my ideas and techniques have changed and developed so much. So much so, that when I finally came back to it a month ago and worked on it to completion, the end product has turned out totally unrecognisable to that orignal incarnation!
TROPICHRYSALIS
"hmmm yes, very effective..."

New Art for Spring: Spring Burst

Sometimes I find it hard to actually make a definitive decision to stop working on an artwork, and not just keep adding and tweaking for weeks n weeks.... but I've downed tools and marked 'finished' on this one. It's called Spring Burst and coincidentally it suddenly feels a bit Spring-like here in the UK. (But just a teeny bit...)

And nothing says "it's almost springtime" quite like some melty dribbly goo oozing slowly over the rocks and then bubbling up into the atmosphere, don't you think?

Photo Diary of a South African Inspiration Reccy

Now it may at first seem that I am merely posting some holiday snaps in this post. But that could not be further from the truth! What lies below is a visual smattering of findings from my latest inspiration and photograhic research trip. Destination: South Africa.
After 2 days, 3 flights, a diverted plane due to dust storm, an unscheduled overnight in Dubai, & a propellor plane landing in 70mph winds, we reached the first stop: Addo Elephant Park.
A delirious but happy La Shuks gets down to business. The busness of taking in one's surroundings from the moving vantage point of a swinging seat. Then a spot of sketching the nearby thatched mudhut roofs, while enjoying local delicacies... namely cheesy Nik Naks.
Then onto what I was really here for: a proper safari to take in the wilderness of the South African Eastern Cape in all it's glory, and take some photos. The colours! The landscapes! The wildlife! ...and observing the peaceful community life of elephant families. Is there anything cuter than the trunk of a baby elephant?? (If so, then please write and let me know)
Next stop: Nature's Valley. A couple of hours drive from the semi-arid surrounds of Addo, this magical eco treehouse-style hostel, is set within the luscious rainforest region, complete with hiking trails and even it's own 80 foot waterfall and rock pools on the property! Heaven.
A couple of hairy encounters with baboons, some less threatening primate observations, an invigoratingly icy dip in the rock pool, and countless hours daydreaming with intent at sunsets, moons and other lofty sky spheres ...all help to re-set the mind, and get those new ideas brewing and tingling......
I am currently back in the UK and in extreme-creative-production-mode, working on my next series of artworks, hugely inspired by my time being immersed in this beautiful country, & the landscapes of my South African adventure. Watch this space for more La Shuks Future Nature!
